Santa Maria del Molise

Santa Maria del Molise is a small village made unique by some characteristics: the waters of the Rio, which in small water channels run through the entire town centre, and the ancient houses with stone roofs, called "le lisce".
Its wealth of water, from which the ancient name of the town as "Capo d'Acqua" also derives, is the main reason for the presence of countless and evocative mills, now completely restored, which mark the traits of its history.

The Parco dei Mulini , a place surrounded by greenery, a few minutes by car from the center of Isernia. Here the panorama is idyllic, and you will find picturesque waterways waiting for you alternating with romantic waterfalls. The latter arise from the waters of the Rio river; the name of the park is due to the presence of ancient mills which once served as the town's water supply.

Passing the center of Santa Maria del Molise, going up the mountain, it is easy to reach the hamlet of Sant'Angelo in Grotte : a fascinating place with its small medieval village and the suggestive belvedere, with the church of San Pietro in Vincolis rebuilt on the basis of an ancient drawing from the 18th century, the crypt discovered in the early 1950s and the frescoes from the end of the 14th century.

Instead, going down the staircase adjacent to the bell tower of the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, a spectacle opens up for the view, a belvedere from which it seems like you can touch the summit of Mount Miletto with your hands. Crossing precious bronze portals, you enter the beautiful cave of San Michele ; a spring with water dripping from the rock, and a hole that legend has it was the entrance to the path of San Michele through an underground road that led to the Gargano, surround this cave with a suggestive aura and make it one of the most interesting sanctuaries in Europe linked to the Michaelic cult.

In front of the Parco dei Mulini we find another paradise to explore: Ripa dei Forti Village , an immense green area that offers various attractions, both for children and adults. The lake located inside and the magnificent green areas are enchanting.
